Welcome to RETREAT, Inc!
(Rancho Escondido Therapeutic Riding & Equine Assisted Therapy, Inc.)

Rancho Escondido Therapeutic Riding & Equine Assisted Therapy (RETREAT) is a 501(c)(3) New Mexico Nonprofit Corporation that provides Therapeutic Horseback Riding, Hippotherapy and Traditional Riding Lessons to children, adolescents and adults of ALL abilities.

We are located in the Santa Teresa area of Sunland Park, New Mexico, right outside of El Paso, Texas, and we provide services to people in the greater Las Cruces and El Paso metro area.

Our staff consists of licensed instructors with over 100 years of combined riding and horse therapy experience. Ms. Kimber, our president, is a licensed SPED teacher in Texas and New Mexico with a Master's in Special Education and a Graduate Certificate in Autism. She has been riding for over 35 years and has been working with people with special needs for almost 20 years.

We are guided by a Board of Directors that includes a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction, a Veterinarian, a former Director of the American Occupational Therapy Association and an expert in nonprofit business administration. Combined, their respective backgrounds provide the oversight and guidance needed to make sure that RETREAT offers the most comprehensive and effective program possible for people of all ages and all abilities.

The mission of RETREAT, INC. is to be a haven for riders of ALL abilities, from typically developing children who just want to learn to ride, to children facing the extraordinary challenges that come with ASD and related developmental disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Down's syndrome and other disorders. What's more, we hope to reach out to our heroic disabled veterans and help them overcome some of the challenges that they now face as a result of the tremendous sacrifices that they made defending our freedom. It is our hope that, through equine-based therapeutic intervention, we can make a measurable improvement in the quality of the lives of ALL riders!

Rancho Escondido will always be a non-competitive environment where children of all abilities will learn to care for and ride a horse. We start from the very beginning and progress through intermediate skills, including barrels, jumping, obstacle courses and trails. Our focus is on developing the abilities and skills to be safe, competent riders.

Beginning riders will first learn to handle a horse, groom, and tack up (put the saddle and bridle on). From there they will learn to lead the horse up to the arena, tighten the saddle and ready the horse for riding. They will learn to mount and dismount a horse safely, learn the emergency/flying dismount, learn the cues for walking, trotting, and cantering the horse.

Generally students will ride for a week or two before they begin trotting - the first several lessons being spent on basic safety and mastering cues, steering, etc. Cantering takes much longer, depending on the balance, coordination, and bravado of the rider.

Every student is required to wear a helmet that is specifically made for horse back riding. You can see examples of riding helmets here . Students may borrow a helmet for their first few rides, but we strongly encourage each student to purchase their own.

Each student must wear a boot with a heel, either a cowboy boot or an English riding boot.

Every student must wear pants (jeans or English riding breeches). I encourage each student to dress appropriate for the weather and in clothes they can get DIRTY!

Some students may require a riding glove. Don't forget Water and Sunscreen!!!

Upcoming Events:

Weekday Trailrides:  Stay up to date on our Facebook page - We're hosting numerous "ad hoc" trail rides for students of ALL abilities. The weather will soon be cooling down and the days are getting shorter, so stay up to date on Facebook while the weather lasts!

Christmas Photos: We're organizing a Christmas Photo Shoot with a professional photographer. We'll post more info here and on Facebook as we hammer out the details.

We are a Guidestar GOLD Certified charitable non-profit organization. Please keep us in mind as the tax year comes to an end. Hay is expensive and we have started a fund to purchase the materials to build a ADA Wheelchair ramp and purchase arena lights. And, of course, we are always looking for horse tack donations!
